Regulars to Piggs Peake are more than familiar with the variety Zinfandel. Im not going to bang on about what an individual and wonderful variety Zinfandel is, suffice to say here at Piggs Peake we love it (And hate it too. The reason that you don’t see it more often is the degree of difficulty it presents in the vineyard). Our Zinfandel grower (and our Merlot grower and our Cabernet grower) is the great James Sweetapple of Cargo Road Vineyards in Orange. James has studied the variety in great depth and has worked it out. Its a tricky one.
Despite James’s best efforts, growing Zinfandel is akin to driving a sports car with faulty steering up the Amalfie Coast and so year to year the wine varies wildly in colour, flavour and aroma. Similarly, the blending options that we employ are the most varied of any grape we crush and tasting notes are commonly along the lines of the 2013 is like the 2007. Or the 2006 is Pinot weight while the 2005 is Shiraz weight etc.
This year the Wolfie is a blend of Zinfandel, Shiraz and Mataro (more of a Werewolf blend) and no Werewolf was produced. It was a similar growing season to 2012 for those of you who remember that wine.
Anyhow, the only thing that never seems to change is the fact that its just delicious. Zin has a lifted, spicy nose with sweet fruit on the palate and fine, dusty tannins. Its great with gamey dishes.
Zinfandel is often the fastest selling wine at Piggs, so if you are looking to secure some please contact Linda at the winery and make your wishes known.
